Eric Outfield phones & wakes Maxine from a dream at 3am (“ Oh shit, right,
you guys sleep, hey, I’m—”)
She gets up, puts on coffee, links up her computer with his & traverses the
Deep Web with him.
Advised by some wacky avatars (Sandwichgrrl and Promoman) they get into a
corner of the military part of the Deep Web that Maxine is pretty sure is
the Montauk secret facility which scared the bejeebers out of her back in
chapter 17.
They access an old crackly video of some Colonel talking about a time
travel experiment, brutal beyond belief, & Maxine supposes that was how
Windust became what he is.
Maxine decides to take her thinking to Shawn the therapist, who first
treats her to a recounting of his (Shawn’s) relationship with *his*
(Lacanian) therapist - “Total bogosity of the ego, basically.”
Then she dishes therapeutically.
In a moment of anger at one of Shawn’s jibes about her attraction to
Windust, she grabs a Buddha statue as if to clonk him with it - but
touching the icon immediately quells all her rage.
Not thrilled with his interpretation - which is basically that her
attraction to Windust is rooted in fear (“He’s the Reaper, he’s on your
case, and you’re trying to charm your way out of it.”) - which I like for
its opposition to the idea that it’s legit and expected for women to love
fascists - she nevertheless resolves to think about it.
