In a word, Trump. Buying off press et al.
Also, it harkens back to the Vineland passage about Brock Vond and the old

if I wanted to escape.”
That’s pretty true.
Montauk - which category? A little bit of all.
There’s got to be some weirdness in a Pynchon book. Montauk was a Tesla lab
one time, wasn’t it?
Popular book _The Montauk Project: Experiments in Time_ and the series
“Stranger Things” mined this vein. Great anchor for the weirdness. And for
an ascent (or descent?) into allegorical treatment of such philosophical

literalism into speculation about how this relate to theories of history (a
very mild form of time travel but puissant enough) & the effect of
Windust’s possibly real love for Xiomara pulling him in a different
direction from this nightmare.
Xiomara name from Wikipedia:
Xiomara is a feminine Spanish given name, which is possibly a variant of
Guiomar and derived from the German name Wigmar, which means "*battle ready*"
or "battle famous".
