It could also imply something solid between emptier , more faulty terrain. Horst is addicted to the comforts of ice cream and cheesy TV so is block headed or simple in a certain sense, but he has a contempaltive side, comfortable in barren western landscapes, able to see past the noise to the the actual future of commodities, noticing the odd market action related to 9-11. He also provides emotional support and stability and time to their sons, sensitive enought to connect to their world.
A bartender is always the middle ground. This one nows his stuff, nothing requested he doesn’t know how to make.
