Such a dolt am I... with (I suppose) somewhat old-school tastes in lit.

Let me think about it some more (unless it's already too late).

How about Ottessa Mossfegh's debut novella, "McGlue"? It's mean and
gross and dark, and some of the language is a bit archaic (it's set in
1850) but nothing like, say Mason & Dixon or even The Sot-Weed Factor.
