pages 141-142....another elevator back beyond
the residents' and the freight elevator, feels like
what else in Pynchon's oeuvre?, which works on its
own--has a "mind of its own"....."Maxine" [her instincts are good,
remember?] comes to
believe it is haunted, "that Something Happened in it years ago that never
got resolved."
Ghosts like the one in Hamlet making the plot happen?
Is that capped Something Happened an allusion to Joseph Heller's
*other *great novel, exact title, full of a modern corporation man's fears
about his world....."I get the willies when I see closed doors" [in an
office environment];
a novel that ends in a haunting death, so to very oversimplify?
