PROFILES OF WHITE-COLLAR CRIME DEVIANTS PROFILE #1 - SAM ANTAR
Our first subject of exami-nation centers around Sam Aruar, an iconic
white-collar criminal in his own right. Amor served as the former CFO
of Crag Eddie, the electronic con-sumer retail giant from the 1970s.
He conspired with his cousin Eddie Antar and Uncle Samuel Antar (who
together founded Crazy Eddie), in a massive securities fraud scheme
that defrauded many company investors and others alike. Sam's
culpability and criminal actions included skimming, money laundering,
insurance fraud, secunties fraud, and a host of other criminal
acuvines. After being convicted in federal court and pleading guilty
to three felony' charges, he was sen-tenced to only six-months of
house arrest, along with 1,200 hours of community service and $10,000
in fines. This light sentence was afforded to Sam in exchange for his
cooperation and testimony against his cousin, Eddie_ Eddie became a
fugitive on the run, who fled to Israel under a fake passport He was
however ultimately extradited to the United States and charged with
racketeering and conspiracy. From his own website, Sam Antar
self-confesses in a manner befit-ting of someone with personality
traits reflective of psychopathy. As he explained, he and his family
communed their crimes at Crazy Eddie for "fun and profit." Sam goes on
further to say how they had no empa-thy for their victims, and that
neither he nor his co-conspirators ever had any conversations about
morality, let alone remorse for their actions. Moreover, Sam admitted
that his cooperation with the government to serve as a witness against
his family had everything to do with saving his own skin. And despite
any family ties, Sam cooperated simply to avoid a long prison
sentence.' In a 2017 intemew, Sam also dispelled all tradi-tional
notions concerning white collar crime and self-rationalization. As he
stated, "Your humanity, ethics, and sense of fairness are weaknesses
that we — white collar criminals — seek to exploit." He continued to
ray that, "Rationalization is for sissy criminals. Most people think
that we have to rationalize our crimes. Not true. We know what we're
doing and simply do not care about our victims."
