Looking over what I wrote, and the welcome replies from Robert Mahnke
and David Elliott, I wish to add the following:

'The claim that Russian troops committed rapes of women and children "as
a weapon of war" has been debunked.'

That statement was too broad. The claims of the Ukrainian government
have been debunked. That the Ukrainian parliament debunked them is a
good thing.

Also, my polemic against the NYT and the WP appears to have been
unwarranted. Both newspapers seem to have been rather circumspect about
the issue, and I am glad about this.
