That’s the **idea** Pynchon is describing: an optical illusion of the
arched brick courses (more literally the MORTAR joints between the courses)
looking like a helix spiral pattern, probably moving in an
animation-effect, much like the way a film’s projected series of still
images produces the effect of movement.
Don’t expect it to become something you might see in real life (unless you
are tripping).
