 Good piece ... two points worth considering:
      1.  "Was Iraq the way it was because of Saddam, or was Saddam the way he was because of Iraq?"Is Russia the way it is because of Putin, or is Putin the way he is because of Russia?
    2.   Aspirations exceeding capabilities ... John Gaddis made this a theme in his book "On Grand Strategy" going back as far as Xerxes' failed invasion of Greece.                               D.
