Cafe A Brasileira as the Fado music fades, and Billie Holiday's Lets do it comes on, and the caffeinated frenzy of the crowd is reduced to it's lower ebb, I'm reminded of that ill fated wedding at the Cathédrale Saint Louis in Martinique in the company of a certain Viscountess on the lower end of her family fortune, but quite determined, and you see there was no Humphrey Bogart or Lauren Bacall larking about, or Walter Brennan for that matter... Inevitably we ended up in Estoril... amongst the diplomatic detritus and intrigue, both high and low... The Hotel Palacio can be sorrowful and repetitious when in such company... I am now being followed by anindefatigable imp or something, whom I'm convinced is in the employ of the intelligence service of this or that country or principality.... He insists on peevishly arguing over the fate of the chess player Alexander Alekhine... foaming at the mouth you see and constantly wiping his pince nez on a dirty Hawaiian shirt of improbable design... It is my fate to suffer in the company of such people...
