First of all, the author has us from before we start reading when he
accepts the category “fiction“ at the top of this writing. And the way he
goes.

First of all (again, I begin), he quickly smacks you in the face with the
fact that he knows that you know that he knows he’s writing an article (not
a short story or a short novel) for a magazine full of literary
dilettantes.  So, OF COURSE he has decided to talk to us as if we are
insiders, people who know how to play this game.

Clearly, he is consciously fucking with the reader.
