Nathan doubts Picnic’s fantasy; Picnic signs Nathan up for shacking up, and
Nathan agrees he’d do so, but only until he got bored.
(I had this same conversation, mutatis mutandis, on a Suwannee River canoe
trip, fantasizing about building a love shack* in the woods we were
floating through, and my canoe mate had the same reaction as Levine)
Then Picnic gets a little serious about Nathan settling down with a “nice
quiet girl.”
Levine’s offhand answer about loving the Army isn’t quite like that iconic
“run away from women with Huck Finn” business, but he certainly turns the
topic away from love and marriage, doesn’t he?
Picnic wonders whether Pierce really believes Levine will re-enlist
( 33 seconds of Merle Travis:

& Levine says he himself doesn’t believe it. But he says he won’t decide
until the moment comes.
“They drove on like this for about two hours, dropping off trucks along the
way to
set up relays back to Roach until on the outskirts of Lake
Charles there were only
two trucks left. Rizzo, with Baxter, in the truck ahead,
waved Levine and Picnic down.
The sky was completely overcast now and a small wind was
blowing, chilly against their
damp fatigues.”
They’re getting closer to the storm center, it seems.
I don’t understand why they would drop off trucks, though.
