A) M&M (“Mortality & Mercy in Venice”, in which the windigo-afflicted
indigene is poised to gun down the diplomats) isn’t among the stories
included in _Slow Learner_
- i think I’ve read that it is deprecated by the author - “The Secretary
will disavow all knowledge of your mission” type thing.
B) “Low-Lands” & the other SL stories depict, rather than espouse, some
fucked-up stuff, stuff we all still are struggling with, in a recognizably
Pynchonian way, with palliative counter-tendencies, humor, wit, wisdom &
also checks & valances (-;

)
Sure he got better but these aren’t half bad, in fact they look better &
better to me. Confirmation bias? - no, there is some wonderful writing. In
particular, tracking down references & catching nuances is a barrel of fun.
