But it was a great, great achievement so we will give him this holiday
present of reading this
fuller story of the making of that achievement in an homage to his lawyer
friend. Wonderful detail
and the meaning of the law and reliable reporting. Look at how Calley's
lawyer 'helped'.
I got to see the aforementioned David Obst at one point in my career. He
became an agent, for books (and other media for all I know).
He was brought to the Simon & Schuster sales conference to present some
important book. He was hyped to us
as this very famous high-level California agent. We expected all the usual
high-level swagger and self-confidence which
by any other name is known as arrogance.
But he started off slowly with prepared presentation remarks then sorta
dissolved right in front of us like Slothrop, now that
I am finding words for this. Even shaking, we felt bad, and
....ending without flourishes or promises, probably early as someone
did go up to him......
I can now see this a young non-arrogant, anti-war, counterculture
journalist's self-conflict over ...his non-arrogance...(Someone who should
have
known then said we, the S & S sales force were billed as the smartest,
toughest sales force in publishing---The Marines of publishing
so to speak--and his fear as we started to ask our questions overcame
him....)
