Seymour lives in this glorious memory of breaking a story that *Time & Life
*would not publish. I guess they are the major media of their time. NOT.
"It was a frightening time for him in terms of the profession he had
chosen." How many freelancers and writers get turned down over and over?
So, he went to Dispatch News WHICH SOLD HIS STORY TO 35 PAPERS?!.....and
what he chooses to remember hurtingly is two photo-heavy mags which
rejected it? And the difference between his latest and other later life
stories? No major media picked up on it; it has no evidentiary--showable,
like pics, or the copy of the charges against Calley or others who knew:
"On October 22, 1969, Hersh received a tip from Geoffrey Cowan

Georgia who was in the process of being court-martialled

civilians in Vietnam. After speaking with a Pentagon contact and Fort
Benning's public relations office, Hersh found an AP article published on
September 7 that identified the soldier as Lieutenant William Calley
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Calley>. Hersh then located Calley's
lawyer, George W. Latimer <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_W._Latimer>,
who met with Hersh in Salt Lake City, Utah
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salt_Lake_City>, and showed him a document
that showed Calley was charged with the killing of 109 people. Hersh
traveled to Fort Benning on November 11, where he gained the confidence of
Calley's roommates and eventually Calley himself, whom he interviewed.
Hersh's first article on My Lai, a cautious and conservative piece, was
initially rejected by *Life* <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_(magazine)>
and *Look* <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Look_(American_magazine)> magazines.
Hersh next tried the anti-war Dispatch News Service

story to 35 papers.[5]

Follow-up articles in the papers revealed that the investigation was
prompted by a letter from Ronald Ridenhour
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronald_Ridenhour>, a veteran who had
collected information from interviews with soldiers who knew of the
killings. In California, Hersh visited Ridenhour, who gave him their
personal information; Hersh then traveled across the country to interview
them, revealing three developments: that witnesses had been ordered to keep
quiet, that the actual death count was in the hundreds, and that photos of
the massacre existed. On November 20, Dispatch syndicated Hersh's second
article, which was internationally circulated.[5]

This a brief combat report from the battlefield here and abroad in the
aftermath of the release last Wednesday of my story about Joe Biden’s
decision to blow up the Nord Stream pipelines.
First, many thanks for your interest in what the pipeline story was all
about: a very dangerous Presidential decision. You are careful readers.
I’m an old hand at dropping bombshell stories that are based on the
disclosures of sources I do not, and cannot, name. There is a pattern to
the response by the mainstream media. It dates back to my breakthrough
story: the My Lai massacre revelation. That story was published in five
installments, over five weeks in 1969, by the underground media group
Dispatch News. I had tried to get the two most important magazines in
America, *Life* and *Look*, to publish the story, with no success. Editors
at both publications had earlier invited me to do some freelance writing
for them, but they wanted nothing to do with a story about a massacre
committed by American soldiers.
It was a frightening time for me, in terms of my faith in the profession I
had chosen. I was allowed to read and copy by hand much of the Army’s
original charge sheet accusing a sad sack 2nd Lieutenant named William L.
Calley Jr. of the premeditated murder of 109 “Oriental” human beings. I
also had tracked Calley, the Army’s only suspect, and interviewed him at a
base in Georgia—he was tucked away—and gotten his assertion that he was
merely doing what he was ordered to do. Given all this, I was more than a
little rattled—make that terrified—by the failure of senior editors at
prominent magazines to jump at a story that would get international
attention, especially when those editors professed to deplore the war and
want it to end...
