Not sure whether it’s been mentioned, but “Gravity’s Rainbow” makes a
return appearance in the 2022 Rian Johnson comedy “Glass Onion”. Its brief
cameo highlights the detective’s erroneous impression from “Knives Out”
where he states:
“Benoit Blanc: Harlan's detectives, they dig, they rifle and root. Truffle
pigs. I anticipate the terminus of Gravity's Rainbow.
Marta Cabrera: Gravity's Rainbow.
Benoit Blanc: It's a novel.
Marta Cabrera: Yeah, I know. I haven't read it though.
Benoit Blanc: Neither have I. Nobody has. But I like the title. It
describes the path of a projectile determined by natural law.”
MK: Of course, the title hardly does that and is a misspeaking of "natural
law" imao (but it is a character speaking so it might be in character) when
what is meant is natural forces or physics---"no damn rainbow" as Kurt V
wrote similarly about *Cat's Cradle. A--a*nd the meanings of gravity are heavy,
man, heavy as a black hole. ......(see Simone Weil and more)
"But it is a curve each of them feels, unmistakably. It is the parabola.
They must have guessed, once or twice - guessed and refused to believe -
that everything, always, collectively, had been moving toward that purified
shape latent in the sky, that shape of no surprise, no second chances, no
return. Yet they do move forever under it, reserved for its own
black-and-white bad news certainly as if it were the Rainbow, and they its
children...."
