pre-adults—was that of somber glee at any idea of mass destruction or
decline.”

The keyword here is “pre-adults.“ The first word of personal empowerment
that pre-adults (2 yr olds) discover, quite early, is “NO!”

Nihilistic adolescence attitudes are just later manifestations of years of
pent-up “no’s.” Plus, an added bit of “I told you so” self righteousness.
