Maybe “your next will be your first,” was Baxter, but I’m inclined to think
it was Rizzo.

(Overly parsing: if Baxter issued that sally, Rizzo could presumably easily
dismantle it. Coming from Rizzo, he’s holding out a faint hope - “ya say
there will be a time?” - while also squelching-in-the-bud any misbehavior
stemming from horndog jubilation Baxter might have in mind.)


Disordered thinking process…on the damaged road as they travel toward the
Gulf, as they begin to encounter signs of minor storm damage, and Douglas
starts to fill Levine in on the parameters of the emergency they’re dealing
with, Levine admits to himself that Rizzo may’ve had a point about college
nostalgia - and (an understandable touch of magical thinking) that maybe
this recrudescence of the formerly familiar into his routine is the sign of
an impending change, although in his disordered thinking process his
tentative reaction is the idea of going AWOL when he gets back to base…
