Interesting 2nd meaning - that parade of horribles - new one to me -

If a "parade of horribles" was a parodic counter-event at festivities as
described here:

Then Stubbs may be referring to their twisted mission as a "parade of
horribles" trailing behind the rest of whalers (or commerce)

And therefore his mirth would be typical for a participant in such a
spectacle.
