“DOWNSTAIRS, Meatball Mulligan’s lease-breaking party was moving into its
40th hour.”

a) Rather than “in medias res”, we start out (at least by implication)
upstairs from some action

b) which is going to look a little like “party at Pirate’s place” from GR,
with Mulligan in a sleeping position similar to one later assumed by Teddy
Bloat

c) also, one might allow “stately, plump, Buck Mulligan” to saunter through
one’s 1st impression here

d) Meatball Mulligan - slightly more dignified, sobriquet-wise, than
Lardass Levine? Mm - maybe.

e) lease-breaking party - is that a thing? Scrolling down thru a search, of
the first 50 items, 90% or so refer to this story’s description.
But other references do show up, so apparently it’s a known strategy.
Seems counterproductive, not designed to foster goodwill or good credit
ratings.
