He’s mock-apologizing for springing the tale of Ahab’s near-impalement by
the ivory limb (and therefore staying mostly in his quarters “both before
and after the Pequod sailed”, while he healed) on us - as an incidental
detail like “oh, by the way” - instead of telling it earlier as a part of
the story, in chronological order (“in set way”)

Which replicates the timing and the way Ishmael would’ve learned about it,
because Ahab’s “inner circle”

that ever-contracting, dropping circle

were closed-mouthed about it.
