Agree with Mark about lost and taken. I see the folded burgerich as  ordinary stamped  civil society mail stuck inside newspapers as people still do. Maybe they even had a system of buying stamps by leaving money in the mailbox as we do in the US, at least until recently, . 

Pynchon loves stamps as part of the historic record, no?
