I think this whole tableau draws the distinction between Hicks's situation, still getting paid in some tenuous kind of private dick capacity?

...and Chazz, who's advanced into a more military capacity, spruced and juiced and, like, pointing out a possible path to his "old chum", although Hicks doesn't recall the same degree of closeness.

Hicks's trajectory, I'm pretty sure, is in a different direction - remembering he started as hired muscle, ignorant army clashing by night, and - like unto good ole Basnight, explicitly cast in a mentorish attitude - starts to bring principle and critical thinking into play.

So what if he's a little scruffy, "thank you, no" - Hicks isn't ready quite yet to gentrify.

Isn't old Dippy more of a criminal to begin with?

Still, he cares about Hicks -  not so much as to prevent him from some Schadenfreude in relaying his warning -

like Doc Sportello, Hicks garners a small but useful amount of respect and affection from both cops and criminals
