This novel, billed as set in Milwaukee and Hungary begins with that
terrif parodic opening line
alluding to Chicago, which is where trouble comes to the town of
Milwaukee....Capone and
the mafia.....P starts off in Chicago, so to speak, a couple-three decades
after his most ambitious novel started  in Chicago
as the US announced its new world importance at the Chicago World's
Exhibition Fair (is that what it was called?)......

A new beginning PR-wise .America as the best and America as the world's
future....
I see the echoing of the "glorious" hopeful beginnings of America as
presented in *Mason & Dixon; *of the sixties as adumbrated
in *Vineland   *

and so, another lifelong theme of TRP''s : Ideals rotting to degradation of
those ideas....Chicago then to now.....and now beyond
since Milwaukee at this time is the city of socialist ideals in practice
already....
