I believe it means becoming so present and "in the moment" that you begin to engage with it on a more fundamental metaphysical level (hence the reference to God)—there is some kind of sublime feeling amidst anticipated destruction, which is both everywhere (the bullets are being sprayed all around) and invisible (the bullets are so fast that they can't be seen). But it's also about physically navigating the situation in order to escape the guns (finding your way, not getting lost, dodging bullets). Perhaps this intense focus on the immediate present is precisely what unlocks their access to the metaphysical/spiritual level necessary for them to escape the gunfire/be saved by God.
