Penny scales - (211) these were still around when I was a kid in the '60s, great big weighing stations in or in front of stores like Woolworth's or Kresge's -monumental, sturdy, with kind of Art Deco lines, a grooved metal platform with a sandpaper-like surface you'd stand on, and in many cases (for a little more money, maybe?) they would also dispense a fortune on a small rolled-up sheet of light green paper inside a little plastic tube.

Sometimes you would point a dial to one of a list of questions; for the question, "where will I find my Master?" it gave me, "in the opposite sex" which, you know, not bad. Good times!
"Haver" - (212) in Hungarian means like, buddy, pal, "buddih" (Pig Bodine)
https://dictzone.com/hungarian-english-dictionary/haver
It's got several meanings in several languages, but since Terike is teaching Hicks Hungarian in ch 39, and she's addressing him as "Haver", this one seems accurate here
Daphne's dream - (214) aha, this is the alternative bruited in ch 36 (that she had dreamed) to Bruno's Fiume villa (for his residence in which she had "almost" prayed)
"...a recurring dream about Bruno, on some faraway island, stepping outdoors every day at noon to shoot the sun with a ship's sextant, just to make sure the island isn't somehow, day to day, changing position in the sea, off on a voyage by itself to an enchanted landfall...Of course it's an island, complete with hula-hula girls, a sleeping volcano, a leaf-thatched saloon that's become a local favorite for dodging into each midday as the clouds rise over the vast ocean, backlit some till-now-unimagined shade of red, rushing in at express speed, the skies letting loose...which is usually about when she wakes up."

Squeezita Thickly "...lives with her Daddy (Wallace Beery), a chef with a big soup-soaked mustache..." (223)
Wallace Beery as chef? Well, he played ship's cook Long John Silver in "Treasure Island" (1934)

"Here, here's a 'Kleenex' [quotes showing the trade name wasn't yet common parlance?]..." (223)
