"Back when I didn't know any better, laying on the tremolo, thought it would get me noticed,
what it did was drive 'em screaming from the room, till one day over the radio along comes
Annette Hanshaw, and some curtain in my mind just suddenly goes up . . .
"Not one of those thrushes who thinks she can sing—Annette thinks she can't sing, may not
really know how she affects people. Made me rethink my whole approach. Got to see the
insincerity in it. Anytime you think you hear the least vibrato from me—"
"I should kick you," Hicks helpfully.
"Thanks, maybe lift an eyebrow anyway, that'd help."
ST 25
Annette Hanshaw disliked show business, disliked her own voice but was, for a period of about
eight years, a very popular singer. In a 1934 poll conducted by 'Radio Stars' magazine she was
voted best female vocalist, Bing Crosby was voted best male vocalist. She had only one film
appearance in the 1934 Paramount short "Captain Henry's Radio Show." Over the passing
years she has become obscure, but Nina Paley's 2009 animated feature "Sita Sings the Blues"
intersperses events from the Ramayana and shadow puppets with the music of Annette
Hanshaw, reviving interest in this unique vocal artist.
