Aluminite™ Cases for EMS Synthi Instruments

History

When EMS Studios decided in 1971 to make a portable version of their flagship product, the VCS3,
they decided to house it in a unique enclosure that had made some waves when it was introduced -
The Spartanite Executive Twin attache. It had debuted in 1966 and won a design award due to its
clever symmetrical design, which was intended to allow a jet-set business traveler to carry on a
single piece of luggage with important papers in one half, and clothing in the other. It was
injection molded from black polypropeline, with lift-off hinges and a divider between the halves.
The resulting Synthi A and Synthi AKS have become iconic, and were arguably the first "briefcase
synthesizers," which have become highly sought after over the ensuing decades.

Original Spartanite cases are nowadays quite scarce and expensive, and EMS themselves (who are still
manufacturing new Synthi A and VCS3 models) no longer have them to offer. For this reason, we have
worked tirelessly to come up with an alternative. Other methods such as 3d printing and poured resins
were explored, but did not produce a quality product. Ultimately, we have determined that an aluminum
simulacrum is the best course, short of investing upwards of US$75,000 for new injection molds!

The result is the Aluminite™ case.
