In my view V. is a very good novel, but Lot 49 and GR are better
still: they electrify the reader more intensely, their magic is
stronger, or something. GR has no peers, it is something unbelievable, the
quintessential 20th century text, but as a dense short text Lot 49 doesn't
pale in comparison with e.g. The Waste Land or Pale Fire, on the contrary.
It's so great to have them both, and V., too. Vineland is indeed remarkably
inferior to these three, but is almost as good as anything by any
other contemporary writer.
