I don't have the bookjacket to _Vineland_ in front
of me, but the description of "an aging fat
man with a mustache" brought to mind the TV
character, "Captain Kangaroo", who was a favorite
of preschoolers in this country from the late
1950s to at least the late 1960s.  But perhaps
TRP would have been a bit too old to appreciate
him, so the picture may be another TV character.

Incidentally, Andrew, if your suspicion is correct
that the picture is TRP himself, you might
want to rephrase the description as follows, should
He be on the List, himself:  a gentleman with a 
flair for facial cosmetics, albeit challenged
by dietary and dermatologic considerations.
