Foax,

Paul Di Filippo mentioned that he thought the funniest line in
`Vineland' was the one about the `Italian Wedding Fake Book'. Much as
I was tickled by it I can't agree, considering it and all other comers
to be outdone by that classic line in the Hawaii hotel scene where
Zoyd's defenestration fantasy ends with Jack Lord turning round and
saying `Book him, Danno, Suicide One'.

Anyway, on the subject of Vineland, I was wondering if anyone can
resolve a puzzle concerning the back cover of dust jacket for the
Secker and Warburg Vineland. The dup on the front must be Frenesi
(left) and Prairie (right) with Ronnie on the box (that's toob to
y'all in the US) in the middle (doesn't that image remind you of the
sculpture described in the Journey into the Mind of Watts article?).
The back has what I vaguely remember from my pre-teen TV years as
Gilligan and the Captain on the box to the left and an aging fat man
with a mustache whom I do not recognise on the right. Is it meant to
be Zoyd? hector? Is it (oh shi-iit) HIM? (now that would be the best
joke in [or rather on] the book ;-).
