Popeye

	Someone said here not long ago that Pynchon's work reminded him/her of 
Popeye.  I can see what you mean--Gory Gnabh is very much what Popeye
would be if he were female: and very nasty.
	There is also a (1950's?) movie, I think it's SOUTH PACIFIC (?), 
which I saw just a wee bit of some time ago.  Right near the beginning I 
think is a scene where a bunch of drunken American sailors in dress 
whites are careening around in a cargo net, being unloaded off their 
ship.  They then break into a chorus of "New York, New York, it's a 
helluva town..."  etc.  This strikes me as very Pynchonesque, much like 
the Norfolk or 1956 Malta sequences in V.--or the runcible spoon fight in GR.
