Possible source of the Pynchon-is-dead rumor

I recently found an article in Lexis about what an ideal telecommunications
hub Springfield, MA, is. The author offered some historical background,
referring repeatedly to the founder of Springfield as _Thomas_ Pynchon, and
winding up with "If Thomas Pynchon were alive. . . ." That might easily
spook the casual, uninformed, unwary reader, not to mention someone who got
the word third or forth hand from such a reader.
