Regarding Pynchon's refusal to pay taxes to support the war, this is from an
interview with Harlan Ellison in Contemporary Authors:

"I love Pynchon. I adore Pynchon. Pynchon calls me from time to time. Every
time he calls me he gets me in trouble. The last -- not the last time, but a
couple of times before -- he called me up, and he said, "I don't want you to
pay your taxes. We don't want to support this war." I said, "Right, Tom, I'm
not going to pay my taxes." I didn't pay my taxes for three years. I was
stuck for back taxes, penalties, fines. So the next time he called me was
like two, three years later. (I've never met him, you understand.) But he
called again late at night and said, "Hi." I said, "Hi, who is this?" He
said, "Tom." I said, "Tom who?" "Tom Pynchon." I said, "Oh yeah, what're you
selling this year, cancer?""
