Ruggles?

Does anyone know whence the "Ruggles" in tRp derives? Mother's
maiden name? Honored ancestor? I ask because I've just returned
from a family reunion (with dozens of cousins I never knew
existed), and a good half of them were wandering around with
"Ruggles" nametags. (I think they married into the family, but no
need to get picky here...) The ancestor to which this particular set of
Ruggleses traced their roots was one Pynchonially-named Elijah
Starr Ruggles, who took the Oregon Trail to California in the mid-
nineteenth century...

Ed, who can't decide whether he's more stunned that one of his
cousins is Latino-Native American and another Korean, or that
the rest of them are rednecks...
