"said" in GR

regarding the word "said" in Gravity's Rainbow, I thought this might be the
case as well, due to the tense of most of the story, but I flipped through
a little and found: "But he said: 'Try to design anything that way and have
it work.'" (159, viking pbk.) Could this be the only occurrence?  Maybe.
But I don't think there's much to it given the tense of the book.
