Hey bub,

If you want to make these sort of clever comments then please just
email your buddies direct. Posting this sort of stuff to the list hits
hundreds of mailboxes - yes the list has grown *very* big - with what
is essentially no more than *white noise*. In the long run this will
only scare off people who clearly have a lot more than you to say
about Pynchon but little time to paddle through the crap in order to
say it e.g. the Steven Weisenburgers of this world (who posted stuff
early in the list's lifetime but isn't saying much these days).

In case you think I am exaggerating things here are some figures for
list traffic derived from Jody Gilbert's archives:

92-93 197 notes (0.38 Mb)
94 398 notes (1.1 Mb)
Jan - Apr 95 711 notes (1.5 Mb)
May - mid-Jun 95 474 notes (1.2 Mb)

My personal archive folder (probably about half the traffic) includes
433 notes (1.2 Mb) since mid-June.

Clearly, the amount of signal has increased substantially but, my
impression is, far less so than the corresponding increase in noise.
If only pour encourager les autres please lay off the inanity (maybe
you should stop sipping that latte and all - the froth seems to have
gone to your head).

PS Jody, if I am treading on your toes here please accept my
apologies. If I have trodden on Mr Porter's toes I am happy to
resolve the problem *via email*.
