Vollman and Powers and Pynchon?

About a year or two ago I tried reading Vollman's _You Bright and Risen 
Angels_ (in fact I tried it twice) but couldn't get past the first couple 
of hundred pages. My main problem was that I just couldn't figure out 
whether the character "Big George" was the narrator or not. The book 
seems like it has potential but I just couldn't keep the "plot" straight 
in my head.

If anyone could tell me if there is a better Vollman work to get your 
feet wet with, I'd appreciate it.

As for Powers, I've read "Three Farmers" and "Goldbug" and enjoyed them 
in the extreme. "Wandering Soul" lost my interest rather quickly, haven't 
gotten around to Prisoners Dilemma or Galatea.
