< Greetings, all!
I was wondering about all of the musical references in V. -- not just
the songs, but the African polyrhythms, recurring jazz players, et al
-- does
anyone have any hypotheses concerning TRP's motives here?? Has anyone
read
anything that does?? Is it possible to construe these references as a
reminder
of the Dionysian (a la Nietzsche) forces that overwhelm the characters
and
plot?? Just wondering....!!!

I always saw this as a time-period reference - the fifties, when hangin' with
various musicians of African-American heritage, and sitting in smoky bars
listening to same musicians wailing away on the instrument of their
particular choice was considered the very height of hep-cat-ness. And the V.
NY crowd definitely defines themselves as bo-ho.
On a different note (no pun intended) someone recently posted a message
looking for a passage in GR concerning the act of naming - I've been
re-reading Don DeLillo (everything) lately, and was struck by the passage in
"Ratner's Star" concerning the aborigine with no name - there's about a 2
page exposition on the act of naming and it's meaning. Interesting
similarity. . .
