Interesting suggestion, but I doubt it can apply as easily to Pynchon.  
Eco pretty clearly cribbed this notion (as recounted) from Borges 
("Jorge" in *The Name of the Rose*, GET IT?), and as we *all* know, 
Pynchon's favorite Argentinian author is Leopoldo Lugones.

Also, I saw Eco give a lecture at NYU around 1986 or thereabouts.  A 
wonderfully entertaining and civilized man.
