With regard to Don Larsson's posting on Coventry: the centre of the
city was destroyed in an 11-hour raid in November 1940. The bombing
of Dresden was in late 1944 or early 1945, so Coventry could not have
been a retaliation for this (unless time's arrow is reversed).
In John Halperin's *CP Snow: an oral biography* Snow says that
Churchill didn't know in advance about the bombing of Coventry -
there's quite a bit in this book about the de-coding operation at
Bletchley - though, of course, there are many other sources.
