Two more recommendations, pre- and post-Pynchon:
Wm. Gaddis's _The Recognitions_ has been talked about a
bit here--to me it's the closest thing, overall, to TP's work. 
And for a more recent entry, I liked Richard Powers's _The
Gold Bug Variations_.  Bushels of facts, slightly shallow
characters, but lots of good stuff, including one character
who is chosen as one of the first Nielson families and takes
the responsibility of deciding what the country will watch
_very_ seriously.
