Closer in time to the writing of Vineland, I recall a cover of 
Coevolution Quarterly, circa late 70s, on the topic of defenestration. 
CQ, as many of you know, was the heir to the Last Whole Earth Catalog 
and edited by ex-Merry Prankster Stewart Brand -- and quite likely on 
TRP's reading table. TRP buddy David Shetzline was a some-time 
contributor. It's a small but clever linguistic leap to 
transfenestration.

Experienced chipheads also use "defenestration" to describe exiting 
Windows.
