Dear Steelhead:
What's your source for insisting that Gaddis went to Yale? Every article
about Gaddis that I have ever seen that mentions his college education pegs
him as a Harvard boy, although he never received a degree.
As to his disappointment at the reception of the Recognitions, you don't need
to know his analyst, all you need to do is read his interviews. For example,
"I spent seven years writing that first novel. When I finished it, I thought,
well, I guess this will change the world. It didn't. Nothing happened. I was
shocked, angry, hurt, surprised. It took me a long time to come to terms with
the fact that, no, I had not become famous. . . . I am on record saying that
I thought I would win the Nobel Prize." Irish Times, 6/30/94, "The Elusive
Interviewee."
