When I was in Northern California last year, we were told about the 
efforts by the local "farmers" in harvesting their favorite crop 
(floating the local economy in the process).  Seems there are some very 
clever people out there in camaflouging what they are really doing.  Who 
knows-maybe TP got some good ideas from a few of these farmers (the 
moniker FEER fits kinda perfect don't it) and incorporated into Vineland? 
 Anyway, we were told to stay away from  certain roads as they were 
inhabited by apparitions real & imagined.  Strange that none of the 
people we stayed with (near Humboldt State University) knew who Pynchon 
was or had read Vineland (they could've been lying)
