To Bonnie et.al,
Didn't mean to offend anyone with that silly post. I had just come off
an all nighter preparing material on "Goblin Market" and I suppose the
goblinism was contagious. Sorry to whoever that my post wasn't as 'clever'
as K's, guess I just don't have that schizophrenic jive.
I find the recent posts on TP and cyberpunk informative; I'm almost
embarrassed to say that I still havn't read any Gibson, although I used
be a fan of Philip K. Dick (except for that disastorous Zelazny
collaboration). I've read a lot about Stephenson, but I hear that
the writing style and his handling of violence/sexuality can be a bit
sophmoric, or do those complaints come from the same kind of readers
who would label GR 'immoral' or 'pornographic'. Can Paul or someone
else give me a mini-review of Stephenson with Pynchon-correspondences in
mind? A lot of SF seems to handle technology and technological change
in drastic, melodramatic, apocalyptic ways. Great for effect, but not
really true, it seems to me, to the manner of tecnological/social change
which GR seems to forecast -- so rarely an apocalypse, usually a
metamorphosis (to borrow a soundbyte from your favorite out of vogue
academic, Norman O. Brown). I'll stop before being chastized for being
too (or not enough) lit-critty.
Civilly and communicatively yours,
Adrian
