Have you read Brian McHale's essay on the use of tv tropes and narrative
modes in "Vineland"?  The essay, entitled something like "Zap!: The Art of
Channel Surfing in 'Vineland,'" is in a collection of essays, "Constructing
Postmodernism" (I think that's the title).
