_Scientific American_ March 1995, pgs 20-21: "[Artists and
scientists] gathered recently for a roundtable discussion
at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater in Lincoln Center to talk about
how the two disciplines can enrich each other...Physicist Melissa
Franklin of Harvard University mentioned Thomas Pynchon's book
_V_, in which he describes the electronic circuitry of a stereo
system. According to Franklin, Pynchon 'understands it all
perfectly, from the shuddering of the speakers to the music going
into his character's head.' Furthermore, Franklin noted that
Pynchon 'describes it as if he's describing a sunset. It is one
of the most beautiful things I've seen.'"
