A really strong book. (Phillip?) Roth disappeared into alchoholism,
emerged a year or two ago, got some press, probably for a new work which
made little or no impact.
I remember the book quite well (better than I do his first name) for the
tension and darkness in a young Jewish boy's life. In the articles I read
when Roth showed up again, the reviewer referred to CIS as a classic, which
suprised me at the time, since I'd not seen much mention of it anywhere or
met anyone who had actually read it. In fact, you are the first.
