There was a discussion about this on rec.arts.books a while back and if I 
recall, most people did have your reaction, including myself.  At one 
point in time it was one of my all time favorites.

By the way...I hear a movie-ization of it is in the works.

Another book which reminded me a hell of a lot of Con of Dunces was 
Handling Sin, by Michael Malone.  It contains one of my all-time favorite 
quotes:  "If Jesus is God's idea of salvation, then God is just too 
eccentric to trust." [I may have paraphrased a bit].
